Absolute must for anyone prepared to enjoy the most popular meal in Slovakia. This is a real pop. Fried cheese became a cult during Czechoslovak socialist republic, paradise in the mouth of working class as well as Communist party members. Today the most desired option among students. Served with french fries or potatoes and tatar sauce in every budget restaurant for 3-5 €. Suitable for vegetarians, but optionally with a slice of ham included. Fully recommended with a glass of beer or kofola.

We call it our national food. Don't miss it while you are here. Try meal of our ancestors and imagine yourself in the herd of sheep grazing fresh-green Slovak pastures. Potato dumplings (gnocchi-like) with special sheep cheese provides you unexpected taste you have never had before. Applicable with fried bacon for carnivores, or without for vegetarians. If you are a real authenticity-seeker, combine it with natural sour milk ("žinčica") to drink. Available in almost every restaurant for 3 - 4 €.

Cod in mayonnaise ("treska v majonéze") is unbeatable option to fill your stomache, if you are a pseudovegetarian on low budget. Mixed fish with some carrots and spices dipped in mayonnaise, recommended with two pieces of classical retro roll (tested for decades by happy working class customers, 12 cents for both). One portion available for 70 cents in every supermarket. But if you are lucky you find retro-fastfood "Lahôdky" and enjoy this meal in authentic environment, preferably standing!

Forget Twix, Snickers or Kit-kat. The coolest snack in Slovakia is Horalky! Available in stores since 70's, enjoyed by generations of happy children, hikers or ordinary humans. Crispy biscuit filled with peanut and cocoa something, covered into everlasting retro design. If you want to be a real Slovak, find your Horalky in any supermarket for 30 cents and combine it with unforgettable coke-like drink Kofola. Horalky means 50 grams of crispy pleasure!
